One of the often quoted numbers is ~184,000. As in, there are about 184,000 fully transferable machine guns in the US on the National Firearms Register and Transfer Record (NFRTR). That number started several years ago during comments made by then NFA Branch Chief, Ken Houchens. Since then, the number has gone down (destructions, etc.). But what is the *real* number? NFATCA has made an official FOIA inquiry to learn just that. If the number can be obtained, we'll get it and publish it.
